On Adapting and Resetting
The mind, body, space and relationship
A and I were talking this weekend about adaptation. How as human beings, we don’t really get to opt out of change. We adapt to new places, new relationships, new responsibilities, new versions of ourselves. Some seasons we choose. Some arrive uninvited.
That is the human experience.
This will likely not come as a shock to those of you who know me, but routines are something I totally thrive on and always, without fail, find myself coming back to.
Though, for years, I was a rigid routiner. I loved consistency a little too much.
If travel disrupted my rhythm or a morning didn’t go as planned, I felt untethered and missing one habit felt like failing the whole day.
So last year one of my goals was becoming more flexible inside my routines, and I’m continuing that this year. Keeping promises to ourselves is a form of self-respect. But experiencing the day as it comes at you is also the joy of life.
A simple way to reset wherever I am is by asking myself: What can I do for my mind, my body, my environment, and my relationship today?
Here are some ways to tap into those fundamentals.
Mental
Three pages of free journaling
Dedicate 30 minutes per day to learn something new like knitting, a language, or a recipe
Unfollow 10 accounts that don’t inspire you
5 minutes of meditation or breath work in the morning
Read a mantra from A Return to Love or A Course in Miracles
Write down 3 things you are grateful for and come back to those throughout the day
Pinterest your inspiration
Physical
Nine hours of sleep
A long run or walk in the sun without a phone
Drink detoxing herbs like Milk Thistle, Dandelion, or Burdock
Prioritize protein and clean ingredients at every meal
Indulge in an everything shower
A good sweat in the sauna or hot yoga
Environmental
Tidy your space first thing in the morning or last thing at night
Open the doors and windows for fresh air throughout the day
Change the lighting temperature in the evening
Diffuse a grounding essential oil
Organize a drawer, cabinet, or the fridge
Wash your bedding
Make a bouquet for the corners of your home
Print and frame a new picture
Relational
Walk the dog with someone
Tell someone what you appreciate about them
Plan a weekend trip with girlfriends
Sending a voice memo or FaceTiming instead of a text
Cooking a new recipe together
Leave a silly sticky note for your partner before work
Drop something small off for a friend or neighbor
Hopefully one of these will spark inspiration for your day!
And if you’re looking for some more of my wellness-y habits, they’re here.
